There are two huge a** problems with the logic behind this whole "OMG I understand Eric and Dylan, we're the same" idea.
Problem #1:
Look at Virginia Tech. Seung-Hui Cho, senior English Major at Virginia Tech, 23 years old. Had a history of being a fu**ing nutcase, and everyone knew it. Throughout middle school and high school, he attended counseling, therapy, and special education classes at school. After Cho enrolled at Virginia Tech, the school was not made aware of his mental conditions due to federal privacy laws. In 2005, he was accused of stalking two female students in, which led to an investigation that would declare him mentally ill. He would later go on to shoot up his school and kill 32 people, wounding many others. So, at Columbine, 13 people were killed. At Virginia Tech, 32 people were killed. But which shooting remains more famous of the two? The answer is easy. Columbine. (Not downplaying the severity of VT here, read on). Why is that? Here's the answer: with Columbine, nothing made any sense. It didn't add up that Eric and Dylan would shoot up their school. They were liked by their peers. They had lots of friends and comfortable associates. They both had dates to their senior prom. They maintained passing grades and seemed like happy kids. All this, and they planned the entire shooting years in advance. It just didn't add up. So, the media started making up answers and coming to conclusions of their own. It began with the traditional bulls*it: they were bullied relentlessly, they were gay, it was their parents' faults, the military rejected them insultingly, blah blah blah...
It wasn't long though, before the police and investigators realized that they were dealing with a different kind of killer. First off, Eric was a psychopath. "Psychopath" is a word that few people understand the meaning of. "Psycho" and "psychopath" are usually synonymous with most people. They couldn't be more different. Here is a description of what psychopathy is, courtesy of Wikipedia:
"Psychopathy is a personality disorder whose hallmark is a lack of empathy. Robert Hare, a researcher in the field describes psychopaths as "intraspecies predators who use charm, manipulation, intimidation, sex and violence to control others and to satisfy their own selfish needs. Lacking in conscience and empathy, they take what they want and do as they please, violating social norms and expectations without guilt or remorse". "What is missing, in other words, are the very qualities that allow a human being to live in social harmony."
A psychopath is similar to a sociopath. Most psychopaths are actually nonviolent, too. They manipulate people to get what they want, and feel no remorse for it, as well as no care for another's well being. A psychopath could easily be a conman or a pornographer. They could also just be in a job similar to yours, or your parents'. They blend in and use the He** out of everyone around them. Scary thing is, they make for the best liars in all the human race. In Eric's case, that meant that he didn't feel remorse for killing, and that he didn't raise many red flags within his lifetime (though there were some). Nobody will ever understand how Eric thought. Nobody. Dylan was not a psychopath. He was just fu**ed from birth. Add that to the fact that Eric was so good at manipulating his friends, and you have yourself an accomplice (though Dylan had no excuse). So, any little basta** who thinks that they "understand" Eric and Dylan obviously has no idea in He** as to what they are talking about. It's basically like a third grader saying, "I understand Sigmund Freud", only infinitely more fu**ed up.
Problem #2:
Eric and Dylan would undoubtedly call their little followers worthless pri**s, and most likely enjoy killing them. This is because of the fact that most of their admirers are bottom-feeding losers who don't do a dam* thing to justify their existence. Eric believed in natural selection, and would see these people as not only expendable, but a nuisance and a detriment to the human race. I do as well, but I'm not about to kill them for it.
Those are just the two major problems with the hero logic, but I'll be dam*ed if there aren't a sh**load more.
So, in response to all the Columbine-themed idiocy and damnation floating around here on deviantart, I've decided to produce a series of drawings in memory of the victims. 13 victims, 14 portraits. The 14th portrait will be a surprise finale. Look forward to it.
PS: if I sound kind of scary right now, it's just because I'm very pissed off. Sure, it's a different side of me, but I promise I still love you guys. Also, if you pay $3 for buttons at Hot Topic, it's OK; I went through a similar phase myself.
